AUGUST 2018 – Cosmopolitan Limassol

Published on August 02, 2018

As the second largest city of Cyprus, Limassol traces its history to the middle ages, and is named so being situated between the ancient Kingdom of Kourion and Amathus.  The city is a blend of old and new and a city where visitors can appreciate the cosmopolitan side of the island. With its charming cobblestone streets, contemporary business structures, overhanging balconies, local shops, restaurants and cafes, Limassol is the ideal city to visit all year round.

The Castle of Limassol is where according to tradition, after the crusades in 1192, King Richard the Lionheart of England married Princess Berengaria of Navarre in the castle’s small chapel. The castle itself is surrounded by the old town’s shopping streets where visitors can bargain with the local shopkeepers for handicrafts and enjoy a cup of coffee at one of the town’s many coffee shops.

Limassol is famous for its excellent, high quality restaurants and taverns by the sea. The city offers a huge selection of different cuisines however, never loses its character with many traditional meze restaurants found in the town center and in the eastern quarters of the city. Some of the best well-known taverns and restaurants of the island are Avli Tou Vasilea and Karatello Tavern which offer guests excellent, traditional, Cypriot cuisine, while restaurants such as Epsilon or Gin Fish are excellent choices for dining by the sea.

As for the Limassol Marina which is located just a short walk away from the old town, one will find a vast range of upscale shops and sea-view restaurants, cafes and even spa and fitness facilities. The area welcomes locals and visitors and offers a taste of living by the sea.  A few minute’s walk away, one can find the Limassol Promenade, where guests can enjoy the delightful atmosphere created by the magnificent sound of the waves, towering palm trees and parks.

Limassol beckons even the most discerning traveller to kick off their shoes, walk on its sandy shores and enjoy the little pleasures that life here offers.
